President Bush speaks about the 4,000 fallen forces, US home sales surprise in February, and Detroit’s mayor could face jail time. Marta Costello hosts the gnooze (the g is silent) - today’s top stories in about 3 minutes. Wanna order a gnooze T-Shirt? They’re shipping now! And I can always use some more survey responses if you don’t mind. Thanks!
Music by Pistol Youth, and Special Thanks to Lettuce for the t-shirt/logo design!
Great Job - thanks for keeping the world populace informed. I feel smarter already.
IN fact, may I suggest that for your cable show,
“Hey kids! It’s time for the SMARTA WITH MARTA hour!”
Wish I had some mad skills…Have to stick to medicine I guess. ( I do have submarine hull in my garage, does that count?)
G
I liked the comment by Goober but I’d suggest using it on T-shirts with something like ‘Get smarta with Marta, watch the Gnooze(the G is silent)!’ Oh yeah, glad you’re back and feeling better.
Some things… just aren’t funny and shouldn’t be made light of.
Still love ya, still love the show, will still be watching you, and still respect you as not only a satirist but as a journalist as well…
But… as much as you follow your conscience while making your show, I feel I would be remise as a loyal viewer for not pointing all of this out as a form of constructive critique.
The opener to this one… poor taste, and a bit painful…
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I’m sorry if I offended you. I do stand by it though and I’ll explain why. I made a very deliberate choice when the 4,000 troops death toll headline was everywhere, I avoided it. You’re right: there’s nothing to satirize, nothing to make light of there. That’s 4,000 families suffering an unspeakable loss.
What is worth shining a spotlight onto though, is our leaders’ response a day later to that awful milestone (a word I’m reticent to use since “milestone” to me normally marks happy things like an engagement or a first home or first word).
President Bush doesn’t say much usually about the human loss and this time wasn’t much different - I think the families of fallen troops deserve more than a few sentences.
Dick Cheney just answered, “So?” when presented with the fact that most Americans do not believe the Iraq War was worth fighting.
I avoid presenting my political beliefs in the show, but my basic human opinion is those who sacrificed their lives deserve more than lip service from those who set this war into motion and continue to wage it with no foreseeable end.
What will they say at 5,000?
As always, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. I really do value the dialogue.
Thank you for your honest response… And that is really what this is all about, and honest dialogue… which is why I find you in specific, and by extension your show, to be as good as it is. You are an honest person who seems to value integrity, that is refreshing to say the least in today’s media market.
As a person it is impossible to not sit back and have a specific set of feelings with regards to the deaths that are taking place in Iraq as we speak. As an American it is impossible to not look to our political figures and expect something else or something more as a response to what is going on over there. This is a part of the human condition, it is also a part of what it is to be an American.
However… If you remove the politics from the situation what you have is a group of individuals that join the military with a clear understanding that in the performance of their duties they may be one day called upon to fight, and unfortunately by extension, may one day as a result die while in the performance of that duty.
Of the 4,000 dead to this point… some are my friends, some are as close to me as family, some I trained personally, served with for years, some trained me. I have performed a number of funeral details and honor guards for those returning, spoken to family members, welcomed home vets new to the VA system and cried with them as they recounted to me their personal stories of the horror that is war…
In the end… it is never easy when you look at the cost of the war in flesh, blood and bad memories… but through it all… it is still a choice that is made by those few who place the needs of those who will never understand ahead of their own when they make the commitment and sign on the dotted line…
That, above all else, should be held to the highest level of respect in my opinion.
“You can’t lose with the Gnooze!”
