The Supreme Court rules 5-4 that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, President Bush lifts sanctions on N. Korea, and scientists settle a Mars mystery.

Benjamin Franklin: Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” (Nov 11 1755, from the Pennsylvania Assembly’s reply to the Governor of Pennsylvania.)
Thomas Jefferson: “The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes….Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Thomas Jefferson’s “Commonplace Book,” 1774-1776, quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria in Chapter 40 of “On Crimes and Punishment”, 1764.
Thomas Jefferson: “The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”
John Adams: “Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self defense.” (A defense of the Constitution of the US)
George Mason: “To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them.” (3 Elliot, Debates at 380)
Noah Webster: “Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe.” (1787, Pamphlets on the Constitution of the US)
Noah Webster: “The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops” (Noah Webster, 1787)
George Washington: “A free people ought to be armed.” (Jan 14 1790, Boston Independent Chronicle.)
Thomas Jefferson: “No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” (T. Jefferson papers, 334, C.J. Boyd, Ed. 1950)
James Madison: “Americans have the right and advantage of being armed, unlike the people of other countries, whose leaders are afraid to trust them with arms.” (Federalist Paper #46)
Marta - you KNOW I am a huge supporter (and will continue to be so). But in regard to the GUN issue - I hold STRONG to the original intent in the constitution that the Second Amendment is essentially guaranteeing all of the other amendments. It is ultimately what prevents us from becoming controlled by the government — period. PLease don’t read into this that I am a “Gun Nut” and think that everyone needs to be armed at all times, but the Second amendment protects your RIGHT to have a way to proect yourself against the government - plain and simple. Most of the garbage quotes I heard in response to this from the anti gun crowd did not have a shred of truth to them. For Instance - Chief of Police from LA “If you have a gun it is more likely to get used against you - FALSE FACT! - The argument that America will be less safe - FALSE - Check out hte FBI Crime data reports - They show that violent crime has DROPPED in states where the right to carry has been enacted - Not Increased as fears. Check out the stats for Florida alone. It has been dramatic. The one argument that needs to stand in my opinion is the need to keep firearms properly stored in the home - but triggerlocks on a load gun are dangerous. You cannot effectively manipulate it off quickly in a time of need. THere is great responsibility in owning a gun, but I am pleased that the supreme court ruled the way they did. This makes me and you safer. Prosecute the criminals. Over 80% of gun violence is committed by people with previous gun violence records - hey How about prosecuting them and controlling the problem at THAT point - 80% of the problem immediately solved.
Set aside the gun-talk for a while. There’s more important stuff to discuss: We have to convince Marta to try out to be MSNBC’s “citizen journalist” in their Convention Contest:
No, that’s not nearly as cool as being The Daily Show’s roving reporter, but any Gnooze is good Gnooze. And Marta could show those Project Breakout people the error of their (mis-)judging ways.
I know you are from California, but that’s okay(i really like N.Cali…Werd, bitch((not you) anyway thank you so much for the card and all-you’re a PEACH! jrd
Regarding the Mars probe. OK, poke fun at the geeks. They should be fair game just like the rest of us. But, I don’t think that the Mars-probe budget has been subtracted from the cure-cancer budget. Perhaps we could free up some funding for medical research by refraining from invading other countries. Other than that little goofy remark, I really enjoy your mind-reading act. Pretty accurate, methinks.
In support of the Mars probe critique, I want to say that the “comet(s) or meterites of substantial proportion” creating the pockmarked surface on part of Mars has been the going theory since I read about it in the early 1960’s.
And I must admit that I haven’t worried about it since.
And, if we’re going to all be members of some “well-regulated militia” which would be capable of overthrowing the US gov. to end tyranny, as the 2nd Amendment states, then we’re gonna need more than little pistols and AK-47s, or M-16’s. We’re gonna need rocket launchers, helicopter gunships, anti-tank guns, etc., etc. I mean let’s get real, it’s gotta be nerve gas, jet aircraft and actual nuclear weaponry to keep up with, (much less seek to defeat) the U.S. gov’t. in this day and age, so why is the 2nd Amendment even considered relevant? Muskets and cannon were pretty much state-of-the-art back then. Not to inflame Goober, but why not take this to its logical conclusion? It wasn’t written just about carrying heat in the inner city, or self-defense of property when they wrote that screed called the Constitution. They had to confront the ruling powers, and
wanted to ensure that the ability to do so was unabridged. But as of now, anyone planning something anarchic has a little problem ironically titled The Patriot Act, if they dare even write or telephone others about it.
Go to a country that doesnt allow its citizens to own guns and you will see its far more violent and so many people disrespect one another there is little in self control. I was in Romania the gov had machine guns the people had nothing and it was a criminals paradise.
I personally do not own a gun but the day we lose our rights to own one game over america is communism.
greatest words ever spoken ” You can pry my gun from my cold dead hands” and ” Guns dont kill people I do”
God Bless America ask yourself one question do you believe for a second if order our own military would kill inocent civillians if ordered to do so???
Restricting people from owning guns only stops honest people from owning guns.
MANY felons are caught with a weapon (when being arrested for unrelated charges) - and they aren’t supposed to have them. People who don’t follow the rules, won’t.
Guns are banned on school campuses - does that stop school massacres? No.
You know what stops people from abusing others? The fear that they don’t have the power to do so, the fear that they will be stopped, and thankfully with some people, a good heart. But since not everyone has a good heart, we need to be able to be strong, and protect ourselves.
I never used to carry a gun, then I was assaulted in a parking lot. Once you are put in that situation where you feel terrified and powerless, once you have a taste of the reality of what terrible things life can bring you, you won’t know why I carry one now.
Now the idea of not having a firearm with me terrifies me because I know what people are capable of, and I know that I can’t expect them to just take pity - begging doesn’t work. That guy humiliated me publicly and made me terrified for my life. I am forever scarred, because I chose to live in a fantasy land of safety.
And fyi, the mortality rate for stabbings is worse than shootings, and stabbing is what criminals would be doing if they couldn’t be shooting.
Not only that, sure, other countries have miniscule amounts of FIREARM crime compared to the U.S. - but what about the actual crimes themselves? Murder, rape, robbery, etc? When I was robbed at work - it wasn’t with a gun - it was with a knife.
Guy I knew that died chasing someone who did a bear run? Stabbed, not shot.
We need to change the attitude, the ideals of america - the guns aren’t the problem - it’s the people who use them. It’s our self-centered society, our desperate, our homeless, our drug addicted - especially our drug addicted.
